sanctuary

Photobucket Our balcony is resembling a tree house more and more each day. Sitting out there, wine or chocolate in hand, is quickly becoming an instant escape from the rush of city life.

new york, at a glance

Photobucket

Just as I knew I would one day live in Montreal, I know now that I will eventually be moving to New York. I'm not sure how it's going to happen, or when, or why, but I am certain (or at least really hopeful) that it will.

I got addicted to walking, and couldn't stop. With each step, I felt like I was one bit closer to being a teensy part of the city, and that I was some how absorbing a little bit more of it. I breathed deeply, and that smoggy, smelly, hot dog smoky, city air gave me the special kind buzz derived from equal parts pollution and city energy. We walked so much that I wore out the soles of my shoes, and could barely drag myself out of bed today. It was awesome.

We took in the Manhattan skyline over beers and wraps from a Brooklyn rooftop, got our fortunes told (and waited half an hour for hot dogs) at Coney Island, ate pierogies at a Ukrainian festival, danced at what we dubbed a "hipster grinding bar," rode the carousel in Central Park, salivated over cupcakes at Magnolia, swayed to calypso music at a block party, drank a good amount of wine, and bought the world's tackiest dress.

My 26th birthday was exceptional, marked by a fabulous excursion, true friends, and an elderly gentleman with gold teeth saying "mama don't look it!" when he saw my age after I handed him my ID at the wine store.

a fantastic combination

Photobucket It's a long weekend, it's my birthday, and I'm in New York for the first time in my life with some of my favourite people in the world. I feel very lucky at this moment.

granny glam

I had a lot of fun coming up with ideas of how to raid your grandma's closet to freshen up your wardrobe. It's all about bringing in the old to breathe some new life into your closet.

on bodies

on bodies On Bodies, a band consisting of Mark, Sheena and Brian (my dear friends and boyfriend) recently finished recording its EP. The launch is happening a month from today, but I am too excited to wait until then to tell you about them.

A snippet from their bio:

On Bodies’ anatomy consists of a melodious torso with three separate, distinct heads: Mark Ambrose Harris, whose deep dramatic baritone serenades an introspective set of keys; Sheena Hoszko, whose raw soaring vocals blend beautifully with the distorted lines of her bass; and Brian Fauteux, who knits it all together on the drums, providing an unbreakable backbone for the band’s sweeping compositions...

If this piques your interest, go check out their Myspace, Facebook fan page, or CBC Radio 3 page.

And, if they eventually post their song "Ballad for an Old man," you might just hear me busting out some opera in the background. I feel lucky to have even been a tiny part of this fantastic album.

spring awakening

All the stuff that's springing up around the city is planting all sorts of ideas in my mind. It's that time of year again (the weeks approaching my birthday) where I assign myself the annoying yet important task of evaluating what I've done with myself over the last year, and what I want for the year to come.

But right now what I want is to curl up with some cheesy fiction and a big glass of peach-orange juice, and forget about all that business for a few hours.
